Next blog! courtneydoeschina.blogspot.com

Loyal readers, I have completed my time in Copenhagen with an article on Holocaust and human rights education for the Danish Muslim population under my belt, along with a song that I will include below for your musical pleasure. We finished up with a conference in Amsterdam, where the most fascinating and inspirational piece was a movie called "Bringing Down a Dictator," about the nonviolent resistance movement that removed Milosevic from power in 2000. I suggest it to anyone who doubts that a small group can make a difference against a far more powerful force. (And doesn't everyone?)

More immediately, I am happy to announce the grand opening of my new blog for my new summer adventures! Please continue Courtney's Global (read: Jet Lagged) Summer 2010 at http://www.courtneydoeschina.blogspot.com.

The human rights song
(To the tune of Jason Mraz, "I'm Yours")

Well, human rights are cool
But they have the power to disturb;
Like what if you're a Bosnian
Or you're a Serb
Learning about the war?
What are you learning for?
Your teacher's talking all about war and prevention
But you're just rememb'ring the political tension.
Your family says to pick a side;
Now your teacher says revise.

So schools, don't hesitate to fix this fight
Teach human rights--
That's right.

We know it's not the only solution
To avoid all the children's confusion.
But it provides an equal frame
For this political game.
The truth is that Denmark is gaining diversity
From primary school to university,
So we cannot ignore
What kids were told before.

So schools, don't hesitate to fix this fight
Teach human rights--
That's right.

Open up your eyes and recognize
The difference that exists in student minds
Open up their eyes and they'll unite
And not divide.
